Hike, EMTs, Search & Resue and an ambulance!

If That title wasn't gripping enough for you wait until you hear my story. I had gotten invited to go hiking to Horsetail falls in Alpine with a group of friends from my ward. Hillary Waldron, Ben Austin, Abe Austin, Christian Austin, Imma, Kaory and Shelby. The hike up wasn't too bad. just very steep and rocky. So we went up to the upper falls and sat down and took some pictures and then decided we wanted to go down to the lower falls.

Going to the lower falls is difficult cause you have to climb down all these rocks. Shelby and I were a head of the group. We came to this rock that we needed to climb down. Shelby had already gone down it and I had crouched down to go down when my left foot slipped and my right foot stayed. I twisted my ankle. Or so I thought that was all I had done. Cause all of the sudden I had a shooting pain in my knee. I knew something was wrong and that I wasn't going to be able to walk out of there. The rest of the group finally caught up with us and Jacob moved me to a flatter place and out of the trail. He gave me some Advil for the pain. He then gave me two options for how I was getting off the mountain. He could either carry me or call emergency. I opted for the second option. I knew that the trail up was very rocky and I was afraid of him losing his step and dropping me. So we called emergency. This happened about 6:30pm May 12th. Right after it happened the Austin's gave me a blessing. They went up to see if there was anywhere that life flight could land. Went they got back they said that they had seen people on horses and tried to get their attention.  Life flight came but they couldn't find a flat enough place to land and they don't do the basket when its getting dark if they don't have to. So they left. While we were waiting for the EMT to come up we were joking about whether or not they would be attractive. So the first EMT makes it to me at about 7:30. He gets there and is starting to give me an IV. Imma of course decides to ask him if he is single. His response was I have five kids and a mortgage you don't want this.

The first EMT had seen the couple on the horse and they had offered to take him up. I was told he said no and kept running and then turned around and said yes. So he and the guy got on the horses and took off on a dead run. leaving the guys wife to keep running up with the other EMT. So the guy with the horses comes down to where I am and I said hey I know you. It had been Kolby and Amy Rollins up there riding. They use to be our neighbors and they keep their horses in the field next to us. They had been talking about taking me down on horse. The EMT asks me if I am allergic to anything and I said yes horses. So we waited for search and rescue to come up with the gurney. So while we were up there waiting for everyone to come Shelby had called mom and dad and told them what had happened. They came up to the trail head and this is what they saw when they got there.

Mom did say it was a little disheartening to show up and see police, ambulances, fire trucks, ambulance and 30 search and rescue cars.

So when search and rescue finally got there they got this gurney setup. it had just one wheel underneath and then guys would carry it on. There was one and my head and feet. Then two or three on each side. to get me on the gurney there were a couple of guys holding up the bottom so it would be level while they strapped me in. They of course had to pull me up the part I had fallen down. It was so cold up there, while I was still sitting there I had lots of jackets and a blanket on me. While I was on the gurney I had a blanket and a down sleeping bag.

The journey down to the ambulance seemed to take forever. There were a couple of times when the guys would trip over a rock and drop part of the gurney. kind of freaky. They would also but the sleeping bag over my face when the branches got low. They had Kolby and Amy out in front scouting out the best trail to take me down. They had guys with ropes at the front and back to help keep the gurney from sliding down.
When we got to the bottom and I saw my dad I started crying again. (my mom said that it was killing him that he couldn't hike up the trail to get to me. Cause of his MS he couldn't hike to me or they would be carrying him out also.) We got to the ambulance at about midnight.

So then they moved me from one gurney to the other one that goes in the ambulance. My dad rode in the ambulance with me. We got to the hospital and they moved me from one gurney to a bed. They put me in a room. They said that they would come and get me for x-rays. They asked if I needed anything for pain. I had said no. But as soon as the nurse left I decided I needed some. I pushed the call button and asked for it. They were taking forever to bring it to me. Dad got frustrated and went out to the desk and told them to bring me the pain medicine. I got it right away. After they gave it to me they took me in to x-rays.  When the morphine started to take affect I fell asleep. I woke up while the doctor was talking with my parents. My dad told me the knee wasn't broken. I fell back to sleep. While we were in the hospital I said Happy Mother's day mom. I am sure she could of come up with a better way to spend Mother's day.

I had just dislocated my knee. My dad said the injury I have is common in football players. It is when they are crouched down and get hit. In my case it was crouched down and slipped. The nurse came in and gave me a knee brace and then had me test out the crutches. Not a good option when you are drugged up.

So I finally got home from the hospital at about four. I went straight to sleep. So I had a great story to tell Nate we we spoke to him on Sunday.
